<News> Fmr. OBRA Membership Director Selected for Promotion

(Posted 1JUN 2006)

Cowboy Bull RiderIt has been learned that Mr. Jason Parker, former Membership Director of Japan's first rodeo organization, the Okinawa Bull Riding Association, has been selected to be promoted to the rank of Warrent Officer, as of 1 February (he is currently a Gunnery Sergeant).  As a member of the OBRA's board of directors, Mr. Parker exerted great leadership of the organization's memebers, contributing greatly to the spread of rodeo in Japan.  As an Officer of Marines, he will now be expected to exert the same leadership, this time, of Marines.  Real Western wishes to congratulate Mr. Parker from the bottom of our hearts.

The Okinawa Bull Riding Association was initially created as the "Okinawa Bull Riding Club"  by a few US Marines on August 17th, 1998, in a small Country bar on Okinawa.  Over several years, they would change their name to the "Okinawa Bull Riding Association" and continue spreading rodeo to Japan.  While the OBRA has dissipated with time, its spirit and activities have been carried on by members in the Kansai region under a new organizaton, "Bull Riding Japan."

Bull riding is an event of rodeo where a rider mounts a large bull, and is judged on the performance of his ride during an eight second period.  It has been voted as the most dangerous sport in the world.

It has been learned that, Mr. John Mathews, former Vice President of Japan's first rodeo organization, the Okinawa Bull Riding Association(OBRA), pioneer of, and great contributor to rodeo in Japan has been selected for promotion to the rank of First Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps.  As in other years, many thousands were up for promotion to the rank of E-8 (Master Sergeant or First Sergeant), but only 1015 were selected.  Of the 1015 selected, only 209 were tapped to become First Sergeants; Mr. Mathews has managed to pass through the narrowest of gates.  The Mathews have always been veryBull Fighter supportive of this site, and we at RealWestern.com extend our heartfelt congratulations to First Sergeant (select) Mathews and his family.

<News> NTV Begins Broadcast of Stereotypical Program
(Posted 29 APR 2006)

NTV, one of the major television networks in Japan has begun the broadcast of a program called "Galcir" at 9 p.m. on Saturdays.  The plot of the program is that a Japanese cowboy who grew up in the US is back in Japan in search of a person.  He parachutes out of a US military aircraft in to the center of the hip shopping and club district of Shibuya Tokyo, and befriends a group of young carefree girls (known in Japan as "Gals") who like to dance a odd dance known in Japan as "Para-Para".

The way in which the program portrays cowboys and Native Americans is nothing short of humiliating.  The portrayal of the cowboy is a Japanese stereotype from 30 or 40 years ago, and is highly insulting.  The way in which Native Americans are portrayed is even more condescending, racially insulting and nothing short of indignity.  This sort of program should not be allowed in this day and age.

Many Japanese young have complained that the way "Gals" are portrayed is wrong, yet there seems to be no outcry against the insulting way that Native Americans and the American Cowboy are portrayed. Please express your complaints at the below sites of BPO and NTV:

<News> MAR 9, Chris LeDoux, 56, Dies
(Posted 13 MAR 2005)
Country Music singer and former World Champion rodeo cowboy Chris LeDoux died on the 9th of March of complications related to liver cancer while surrounded by family and friends.  He was 56 years old.  Chris LeDoux was a multitalented man, becoming a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Champion in the event of bareback bronc riding, then becoming a popular country music singer boasting sales in the millions.

Born October 2nd, 1948, Chris showed signs of prowess when he became the bareback riding champion of Wyoming in 1967.  Eventually in 1976, he would become the PRCA's champion of the World in that same event.  He began writing country music in his teens, playing his guitar and singing to raise money for his rodeo travels.  Many of his songs are strong rock, and he sings many songs about rodeo which touch the heart of many a rodeo cowboy.  He gained popularity after country superstar Garth Brooks mentioned Chris in his chart topping debut single, "Much Too Young (To Feel This Damn Old)"followed by many hits of his own.  Chris LeDoux's final project would be the 2003 'HorsePower' album which recorded sales of over 5 million copies.  He had been diagnosed with liver disease in 2000, but continued to tour aggressively despite the illness.

I had the pleasure of attending a concert he did in December of 2002 in Las Vegas.  The hall wasn't all that big, and the stage was bare, but as soon as Chris stepped out, it was immediately transformed into an explosive event.  I found my self enthralled as Chris held back nothing, singing and entertaining in his rough and rowdy yet classy cowboy style.  As the crowd called for an encore, Chris rose from below the stage aboard a moving and bucking mechanical bull, emitting a sense full of life and of powerful energy.  Even while running around on the stage and singing, Chris never thought twice about reaching down to shake hands or autograph the items stuck out by outreaching fans.  So caught up in the moment, I couldn't stop my self from running up to the stage and shaking his hand like everyone else.  I remember his huge hands almost enfolding mine as we shook.  Particularly memorable was his warm, captivating smile.  I would see him in concert again in 2002 and 2003, but his concert in 2004 would be cancelled due to health reasons.  I greatly regret I never got to see him again.

 May he rest in peace.

<News> Bullrider Jinichiro Shibahara to be featured on Sports-i

Japanese bullrider, Jinichiro Shibahara will be featured in an upcoming episode of the documentary program, "Movin' you Honda" on Sports-i in Japan.  Broadcast dates and times are listed below.  "Movin' you" is a 30 minute program which showcases various athletes in action in a variety of sports.

Jinichiro Shibahara, also featured in "Rodeo Cowboys of Japan" (Japanese) section of this site, is a Japanese bullrider who regularly travels to the US and Canada in order to realize his dream of becoming a professional bullrider.

Sports-i has told this site that their thesis for this episode of "Movin' you" is; "A man entering various Pro-Am rodeos and continuously making attempts at that short, yet long, eight seconds.  What is it about rodeo that continually spurs him on?  This is an attempt to try and unveil one man's desire to repeatedly take on the challenge known as rodeo, despite all the danger."

Jinichiro Shibahara claimed victory recently at the 2nd Annual Osaka Stampede Rodeo of October 12th and 13th in Japan.  It is very likely his exploits there will also be aired.

Rodeo is ranked 4th in popularity of all professional sports in the US, but is a minor sport in Japan, where even the basic rules are not commonly known.  This program is a rare chance for Japanese to get a glimpse of an athlete who competes both internationally and domestically.  Don't miss it! On a side note, Sports-i used to broadcast ESPN pro-rodeo, and it is sorelymissed by some of us.  (2002/10/23)
